The Old Road Into Town

The Old Road Into Town

Product Information
Scene of Comanche Lane in January. This road runs along the backside of the buildings fronting Ledoux Street in downtown Taos. The name no doubt is a holdover from the 18th century. In 1750, when the Spanish population here numbered around 250 men, women, and children, 3,000 Comanches arrived to spend the summer. This, of course, led to a lot of tension because Taos was a remote outpost in those days and totally at the mercy of whomever showed up. Fortunately Taos Pueblo had good relations with most of the surrounding Indian nations and there was no slaughter. The road is little changed today.
